About the Composer...

I’m a composer and singer who has worked and participated in diverse programs and workshops both locally and abroad. My main aim now is to work in the community of my birth in order to impart the skills earned in my 20 year service in the global music fraternity.

SYMD: The ‘Soweto Youth Music Development’ under the directorship of Mr. Victor Koapeng has just celebrated 20 years since its inception. It is a place where I used to teach the theory of music from grades 3 to 5 from 2008-2011. I also conducted the youth choir and also writing new compositions for it.

The New Music Indaba: Is a concept that was spearheaded by Professor Michael Blake, a South African born composer and a pianist who after many years abroad decided to come back and founded the New Music Indaba. I was one of the lucky few to be chosen to be part of the small group of black up and coming composers where we had to ‘cut our teeth’ as young composers by writing music for a wide array of musicians from abroad at the then Grahamstown Arts Festival, now the Makhanda Festival.

The musicians we wrote for were the now defunct Sontonga String Quarter, Dawn Padmore, an opera singer form Liberia and the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet among others. This was a great experience for me as a composer.

I have been actively participating as a session singer in the music industry of South Africa. Working with Jazz saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu, Jazz pianist, Themba Mkhize, the late Hugh Masekela, Pops Mohammed, Sibongile Khumalo, Abdullah Ibrahim and a host of others.

I was commissioned by a London based a Capella group called ‘i fagiolini’. They cover mostly early era music from the classical space in Europe. They commissioned two songs which they ended up premiering in Washington DC at the Kennedy Centre. My self and classically trained Pianist and composer Mr. Mokale Koapeng were commissioned by the then Sowetan Nation Building Choir festival before its closure. We had to write for the orchestra and over a thousand voices on this commissioned work.

Further Afield.

Performances with the world renowned harpist Andreas Vollenweider at the local Joy of Jazz and at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

The 2006 Tour of the United Kingdom with i fagiolini and the SDASA Chorale, a South African male choir.

In 2006 we formed an A cappella sextet called Africappella where i was composer and singer in the band. We toured Germany quite extensively, Geneva and Belgium.
