List of Works

Sue-hm Kwee (Suum Cuique) (2018)

Instrumentation: Saxophone quartet (S, A, T, Bari.)

Programmatic information:

Programme notes provided by composer

The work has specifically been written for the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet. The title is a free
phonetic creation of the latin expression suum cuique meaning ‘each to his own’; everyone has the
right to their own preferences; to each what rightfully belongs to him. This motto has been used as
a basis for the exploration of extended fingerings. They are mostly implemented as the extended
new music playing technique the microtonal trill (also implemented here as a slow phenomenon).
The trill, in short, forms the structure of the work setting up an organised musical exploration,
specifically of this uncertain note (in the context of its microtonality), which together with the
original note forms the trill.

A piece for ensemble and tape written for different set-ups for Wicomb`s composition residency in Switserland. The first version is written for the Swiss ensemble Ums `n` Jip (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen). This version  is strictly notated for counter tenor and tenor recorder. The second version is vaguely notated (open score) for the Swiss free improvising ensemble Potage du Jour ( Franziska Baumann, Jurg Solothurnmann and Christoph Baumann). The last version has no notational indications and is absolutely free except for the soundtrack/tape. Petra Ronner completed this project with her improvisation with the tape.
