Lloyd is from Grahamstown (now Makhanda) in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. He started music lessons in 1987 and then took music as a subject in high school at Graeme College. After matric, he obtained a piano teachers licentiate, B.Mus and M.Mus degrees from Rhodes University. He chose the composition route under the tutelage of Michael Blake.
