Notes from the composer: “What I’m trying to emulate in my own piece is drum and bass music. I like this idea of creating electronic music with classical instruments — it’s something that Matthijs Van Dijk and David Bruce have also looked in to a lot (and of course they inspired me as well) — and I just wanted to write something fun to be honest. You can probably also spot some hints of minimalism or layering, as these are compositional styles/influences that I’ve noticed I use!”
About the composer
Erin Potgieter is a South African composer, orchestrator, and clarinetist currently based in Europe.
Her creative interests include experimental sounds, exploring instrumental timbres and extended techniques, music inspired by narrative or visual media, and translating non-musical concepts into music/sound. Erin’s favourite elements to play around with are colour, texture, and rhythm.
This intrigue with external sources as inspiration is what led her to pursue a career in writing music for visual media. Although she has chosen composing as her career, she still has a special love for clarinet, and playing chamber music, in particular!
Erin holds a BMus (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University, specialising in Composition & Orchestration, as well as an MFA in Music for Motion Pictures and Contemporary Media from the Film Scoring Academy of Europe.
